Comparing Troop Health, Defense, Attack and Combinations
This is the 3rd post in the series of Battle Tested articles. This is another one of THE MOST controversial topics in Game of War and we are here once again to show you the truth with real battle tests, with real troops, and with real numbers.
Rallies are no doubt becoming a MUCH larger part of Game of War, but how do you choose which boost to turn on and which gear to equip when you are trying to defend against maximum amount of troops?
Hi everyone, General Bow here again. Lots of people have asked me which stats matter most when defending to kill the most troops and lose the least amount of troops. To test this, I used two identical accounts with every stat and research identical, just like the last set of battle tests.
As a follow-up from last week’s Battle Tested: Health vs Defense vs Attack Combination article which was focused on attacking, this week we will use the same bonuses but test them on defense, so that it simulates you defending against an attack or rally.
The Baseline
Attacker: 16,686 troops (54% more)
Defender: 10,803 troops
To get a base line of kills and losses I attacked the stronghold with no stats on both the attacker and the defender. Test # 1 shows the results.
Spreadsheet of Results
Analysis From A Defensive Perspective
When looking at a single boost alone:
- Attack is the least effective for defense if you are trying to save your troops, because you lose the most troops. On the other hand, you kill 1.69% more troops then when using health or defense. (Test #4)
- Health boost is best if you are trying to preserve your troops, and you kill the same as defense. (Test #3)
- Defense boost is 2nd best. (Test #2)
When looking at combinations:
- Attack and Defense is essentially equal to Attack and Health when it comes to defending your troops (Test #5,6)
- Health and Defense are far superior for defense than the other two combinations for not losing troops. (Test #7)
Conclusion: Health and Defense is the best combination for defense if you want to save troops.
Secondary Conclusion: If you still want to focus on killing enemy troops, add some attack bonus so that you have a combination of all 3 stats (attack, defense, health).
Although, if you are worried you don’t have a enough troops to absorb a T4 rally, start by boosting your health and defense stats as much as possible while you are training troops and testing your fortitude.
Enjoy!

Does legion defense apply to all tiers of troops have alot of people saying only t5 and t6 just wanted clarification on the matter.
All evidence points to it applying to all troop tiers.
Unless I have missed the article explaining this, if you are a rally trap, do you want more defense % or attack debuff %? I get having reg attack % will kill more troops at the expense of you losing more troops and higher defense % will save more of your troops but kill less troops but attack debuff vs defense, I’m lost on figuring which is more beneficial.
Numbers did not take into account mass numbers of troops when defense actually over takes attack.i believe that number is around 8 mil or so
its been a while since i posted here, but i am a small 700+m player who can win rallies vs 7b rally leaders that use cores, last kvk for example i took a rally form the alliance that scored highest in entire eventm, the rally leader was above 7b power and i had at the time 733m (currently 709m) in the full T4 Rally they sent at me i killed 1.25m t4, and they sent 733k t3 to my hospitals. they used cores (and yes obviously i used cores) i used a good set of troop attack defence and health cores, almost no stats at all on individual stats and only focusing my gear on overall stats and i in my opinion crushed that rally considering from what everyone else says in my kingdom u have to be 1.2b-2b to even consider taking a rally…. in my army 0 troops died and 733 k (t3)came to my hospital so i killed close to x2 of that in t4 ofc as u all have stated in tests above that u dont have sh21 with boosts and all by in my experience when taking rallies or hits at all for that matter cores should have over all troop boosts when taking hits, when attacking i specialized cores are better suit for it but in defence u want overall boosts because otherwise when they send 2.375m infantry t4 ur horses will die quite fast and unless u got all ur stats in ranged u wont even kill much, and if u do have all on ranged they just send another troop type in next rally… – The Joker K2 add me on line (i got same name) if u want that battle report and i also got from a kvk before that when some moron 7b soloed me back when i was 500m xD and when i took their rally in normal gear just to try it out 😉
Got your article submission. Will be posting it soon.
When I reskill my hero, I master troop attack, then go all the way down left side, master troop health II, and troop defense II then, because I like bashing trap accounts with my first march, :), I master siege attack II, and trap attack II and with what I have left I back fill on siege attack… usually run out of points at that point.
My question, is this going to effect my end results of how I spec out my hero? Based on previous articles on this subject, defense boosts could actually lessen kills…
Yes defense boost would lessen your kills.
Also, if you are trying to bash trap accounts, don’t use trap attack, because that bonus only affects your own stronghold’s traps. Keep the siege attack though if you use a good amount of them.
General, Commander D Preacher here. Noobie to your site. I find this site to be extremely beneficial to my alliance and its members My Lord!
>If you still want to focus on killing enemy troops as well, you can add some attack bonus, and have >a combination of all 3 stats which isn’t really that bad
Boosts are mutually exclusive, so you must not be talking about boosts when you speak of using a combination of all 3 stats. I always use an anti-boost, then just before troops enter my empire I set an attack boost since my hero is always rallied with one troop. I am always going for maximum kills.
But, I do not really understand what you mean when you speak of adding some attack bonus and a combination of all 3 stats… Could you please explain a little further what you are speaking about or point me to an article in your archive that will help this sink in.
I am an appointed leader of Legion of Domination, I like to go research, practice, find the best info, tactics, and then I relay it to my members… 🙂 they nick named me D Preacher and appointed me leader, I used to be Dawg08… Thanks ahead of time General.
Ok, so stats, refers hero boost stats gained while accessorizing and embedding gems on my hero, right? Since my style is to maximize my kills, I need to accessorize and embed to gain the most health and attack boosts with a little defense boost thrown in as well, correct?
PERFECT.
I enjoyed the article I would like to know what the underlying defense points were and barracks built etc,as a 20% defense boost would have more impact on someone with say a 100% defense bonus from gear, points, research etc. same goes for others….
No strongholds were 21 in this test, so there were no defense bonuses.
Legends! Thanks
This is not battle tested. This is a defensive focused article that takes no account of hospitals or KE points. Whilst the conclusion drawn from this very limited controlled test is that health and defense boosts lose the least troops, if you add hospitals into the mix and KvK kill events points into the mix, then the conclusion changes to 1) troop attack 2) troop health and a distant third 3) troop defense. If you take a single solo hit and lose troops, then you don’t have enough hospital beds.
Things get a little too complicated when throwing too many variables into the mix. Also, it’s not necessary because like you have easily done, you have drawn conclusions of what is important to you during a KE after reading this article. Some people might value their troops more than points, whereas you value the points the most and want kills. Either way this article helped you draw that conclusion.
This doesn’t account for trap stats at all which are vital in defense.
This test is simply to show you how health, defense, and attack boosts benefit you. Since there are trap attack and trap defense you could draw the conclusion that they have similar effects as troop boosts.
