There are many styles and types of trap accounts used in GOW. What one is the best fit for you and your play style and budget?
In my last article, The Relevant Trap Account, we spoke about staying up to date and relevant as a trap account. We also spoke a little about some different types of traps. I would now like to speak a little more about the actual build of the 3 most popular trap account types we see in the game today.
Regardless of the type of Trap Account you decide on building, a point to keep in mind is that you want to look vulnerable to attacks but not too obviously a trap account.
The Shell Account
This trap is probably the easiest and least expensive to build. It’s not always the most effective, however can be a lot of fun to play. These are sometimes called Solo Traps and often do best against solo attacks as opposed to rallies.
It’s usually low on research. This is generally because all resources and speed-ups will be used for training troops. You will need to complete all of the basic research of course and just enough to open all the troops. In your Academy, there are several places you’ll need to visit to complete Combat, Defense, and Ruinous research. You will also need to complete at least some of the Defense and Attack research in the other research trees.
These Shell Traps, like most, also have low-level Strongholds and low-levels of most other buildings within the empire including inner-city, special buildings, and resource buildings. Typically, at the time of this article, the stronghold and possibly some other buildings would be somewhere between Stronghold 1250 and up. Again, as not a lot of expense is being incurred, and buildings can be expensive in T4 speed-ups and resources most players choose to not spend their resources upgrading more than the bare minimum.
If you’ve not purchased the pack with the construction reduction boosts, all or most available resources and speed-ups are used and needed for troops.
Since building upgrades can be costly with the need for resources and blueprints, you’ll want to hold back leveling up too much if you are not planning on spending a fair bit of money. Do try to focus on the buildings that will give you the biggest defensive stats possible where you can. Hospitals provide great Defense stats. Archeology Hall, Gear Shop, Speed Up buildings all provide stats that would be helpful like Empire Defender Attack, Trap Attack, and Defense as examples.
Take the time to discover what each of the buildings will give and focus your available resources on the most important to you.
The Boost Hall is usually as close to maxed on defense and health boosts as possible but otherwise not fully complete
VIP, Gear, and Gems
In addition to low-level buildings, this type of account has lower levels of VIP and Heroes. Gear is seldom maxed and often mismatched as are the gems and runes. Always use the best you have available. Keep your focus on Defense and Empire Defender stats. Participation in events will often award gems as prizes. You will want to be on the lookout for those events.
When you are looking at troops to train, you have several options depending upon your budget. We know that high-tier troops are more powerful and perform better but are far more costly.
The most common troop compositions in these trap accounts are large quantities of mainly lower levels of troops starting as low as T2 level troops and up.
Finding the right ratios and balance of different tiers is the biggest challenge. Since this type of trap account is so dependent on troops you will find you are constantly needing to add and adjust your troop levels and quantities as new features are released.
It’s also important to remember that if you are using Trap Destroyers in your build, you must have T11 troops to protect these costly and limited Mythicals. If you are using Wall Busters 2 as a meat shield then you will require T8 troops.
Scoring and Points
You may burn but you still need to understand how to be positive during events. This may mean that you shield for rallies set and only take the solo attacks sent your way. Always be sure to read and understand the scoring in each event and read reports as you take hits. Points awarded for each troop level killed are always listed on the event pages. Get that calculator out if needed and do the math with points lost versus won.
Completing a lot of events is necessary to gain additional materials and resources. Whether Monster Kill, Quest, or Hero events you’ll need to do as many as possible to gain as many free items and resources as you can.
The Max Trap
This trap account is the least cost-effective; however, it’s possibly the most effective of the three. It’s high in all research, Empire Defender stats, Defense, Attack Debuff, Attack, and Health. The Boost Hall is completed or close to complete with a focus on the stats that are of the same focus as the research and hero skill points.
As with any account you choose to build, research has always been one of the main factors that will give your account a great base. The newest released research, Toxic Combat, is a tree you’ll want to get into.
Have a look at the stats you can add to your Defense from completing it.
875,000% Debuff to Enemy Thunderlord, Waterlord, and Firelord Health
900,000% Demigod Troop Attack
950,000% Demigod Troop Defense
750,000% Demigod Troop Health
Remember that a great defense build will have a good amount of attack to help kill even more of those incoming attacks. Make sure to add Attack, Trap Attack, Troop, and Type Attack when looking at completing research and in your Boost Hall.
Within this Empire, the main buildings are leveled up to the same level as the Stronghold. They are typically a majority of hospitals with as few as one of all other buildings. Some players also find that having a few additional Barracks is beneficial to providing health to support the Defense. Another angle on this type of trap I often see is an all Villa Build which maximizes Attack. This can also be a formidable build but requires a very high level of research and high levels of all other buildings and Special buildings. In this case, you might say that a great offense makes a strong defense.
Depending upon how you want to play this trap, your outer buildings will vary. For a trap that wants to also attack or set rallies, you would add more Ore Mines for the additional Battle Mark attack while others want the even mix of Farms, Lumber, Mines, and Quarries.
It’s important to understand that research and all buildings inside your Stronghold, add a lot of defense, health, attack, and debuffs that remain unseen by an attacker. Always make certain that you keep your anti-scout activated at all times to keep your build a secret. The less the attacker can see the more likely they will want to set a rally or send a solo attack march.
This trap type will often have a low VIP. Low VIP paired with a low-level Stronghold maintains the appearance of weakness and keeps those leads setting on you.
Another important factor in this build is the troop levels. Using all high-tier troops such as T9 and higher will not only provide you with the most powerful of troops but will also maintain lower power. This will also keep you looking like a great target. The amounts of troops and traps used will vary depending on many factors. The higher the research or base tier troop used, the lesser quantities you will need to remain “burn-proof “. Other parts of your build like building levels, gems, runes gear to name a few will also determine troop quantities needed.
Heroes for this mighty trap can be anything from a Pre-Demi 550 hero to a low-level newer Demigod hero. A highly leveled or newest hero is not generally the main factor with this build in its defending capabilities. Although a fully leveled hero and gear are also used by some. The downside is that a good hunter will recognize you as a trap account.
Gear, Gems, and Runes
The gear we mostly see in these traps usually has 1 or 2 pieces that are fully leveled while the other gear pieces are less upgraded or even from a previous gear release. The one piece I’d most recommend you level up to its max level is the Weapon. This piece gives the highest stats of all the pieces. The next in order are Helm, Feet, and Armor with the Accessories being least important.
All gear pieces will need to have the most current gems and runes. Check your blog regularly for updates and new releases of gems and Runes.
Some trap account players choose to use Hades gems to hide their gear. This could be useful when using fully leveled and powered-up gear. I’d caution that because for many leads or target spotters this signifies you are hiding the good stuff while only showing the weaker gear. While the gear can be seen by opponents, the gems are hidden to an attacker.
Wall Monsters are another important piece of this puzzle. This is true though of all accounts for an added layer of defense. The walls must have the top 5 monsters providing Defense and Attack Debuff. The monsters should be leveled to the max. The most popular at the time of this article are:
Demigod Turkey Dragon
Demigod Minotaur Dragon
Demigod Celestial Dragon
Additional and Helpful Information
This trap is not recommended for a player on a low budget as research and high-tier troops can get costly. The new Economic Gear sets help keep those costs reasonable and these Gear Sets are worth obtaining. It’s extremely essential to stay current with new features that get released, especially in the case of new Troops, Special Buildings, new Research, Boost Hall boosts, Gems, Gear, and other features we’ve covered. That means consistent pack purchases.
Another vital tip for building this type of trap account, is keep all things an attacker can see reasonable and consistent with each other. For example, you wouldn’t want to show maxed Defense gear on an older Demi Hero with a stronghold 1250. The inconsistencies would be a dead giveaway and minimize the number of attacks you would attract.
The Points Trap
This account has many similarities to a Max Trap only to a lesser cost level usually. It will, like the first two discussed, have a low Stronghold. I’ve seen these as low as 1250 or on rare occasions lower. They also require high research, buildings, and complete Boost Hall. These traps are most often used during kill events and maximize points by losing lower-tier troops to much higher tiers from an attacker.
They will keep low to moderate power by again using large quantities of high-tier troops with just enough T4 – T6 troops as needed to not lose points while seemingly losing rallies as they burn.
To accomplish this delicate balance you’ll need to do a fair bit of testing and ongoing adjusting. You need a good supply of resources to retrain your losses once troop numbers diminish.
A low VIP is once again used for this type of trap for all the same reasons as the previous types.
Heroes and Gear
Much the same as with a Max Trap Account, a variety of heroes can also be used on this account. The hero is often a 550 hero or maxed older Demi hero. Heroes are usually equipped with older gear but the best possible gems and runes. Although some players do use a 550 hero, it’s only effective when that hero would be equipped in gear such as monster or training gear which would appear normal. Most leads will instantly know the account is trapping if that hero is in good Defense gear. The danger in that however would be the great reduction in Defense stats.
Scoring and Points
As this trap account is most often seen used during events to maximize points, let’s look at how that usually works.
Event points for t6 and lower are usually 1 point, so while you may be burning, there’s a good chance you’re capitalizing on points if an attacker is hitting with higher tiers.
These traps are often reined with a lot of high-tier troops and mythic, as well as enough Trap Destroyers to kill all the traps that are in the attackers’ march. Along with the trap account itself, all the players that rein these accounts will also be scoring points as well. This strategy can add up to a lot of points for an alliance towards winning an event. Often the points scored will be in the billions or even trillions.
It’s crucial to keep a close watch on attack reports and points won versus lost in this account. If it’s losing anything to a mythical like Wallbuster Mercenaries level 2, that awards 0 kill points, then it will no longer be point positive. Time to name change and find a new parking spot.
As far as costs go, this is usually the mid-range of the three described here.
Footnotes, Tips, and Variations for All
You always want to ensure that the hero skill tree is properly completed with whichever hero you choose in all cases.
A good potion can help increase a particular stat such as more Defense, empire defender defense, or attack. Here’s a great guide to assist you in crafting a perfect portion. Potions 101
For all traps accounts, don’t forget to have the best Banners you have available equipped and activated. These are updated and new ones released pretty regularly so watch blogs and the gold store for these. Activating that fifth banner before an incoming attack can make a significant difference in the outcome of that battle.
An option for a Max Trap Account would be to add a good amount of T6 and instantly transform it into a points trap for events. This enables burning and can score a lot of points in a kill event.
When attacked by high-tier troops, this setup allows for points to be gained in killing the incoming higher tiers that typically score far more than the T6 lost in battle. Once again, I advise keeping a close eye on reports and ensuring you are remaining in a points positive position. After the event simply dismiss the low-tier troops or traps trained for the kill event.
When adding traps as part of your defense, beware of the possibility of incoming Trap Destroyers. Be prepared to ghost rally (fake rally) the traps, retrain quickly before the next attack or evaluate if they are helpful at that point.
As far as the perfect trap, they all get the job done if built well. It’s more about what you’re comfortable in spending and how much help your alliance can provide. These two factors will help decide what kind of trap is perfect for you.
