One of the things that I love about Game of War is the flexibility it offers to players regarding configuring their accounts. One thing that many players often overlook is the plethora of gems that are sitting in their Forge. In fact, one of the questions that I often receive from players is what gems I suggest for different play styles or activities in the game. Given these questions, I thought it was time to write a guide that addresses the current best gems for your play style and also tell you about some “oldies but goodies” that are still relevant today.
The “only because my editor made me do it” Disclaimer: The stats and gem selections presented in this article are current as of the date of publication. As anyone who plays Dragon Dimension knows, MZ is always releasing new components to the game and sometimes even changes stat functionality without notice. With every release that occurs, the information contained in this article will become staler (unless updated, of course!). Use this information at your own risk!
Gems – Where to find them, combine them, and use them.
Sometimes it helps to state the obvious. In case you didn’t know, you will find all of your gems in the Forge. The first thing that you will probably want to do is determine if any of your lower-level gems are ready to be combined into higher levels. You can determine what gems you have, and the level of those gems, via the Combine tab within the Forge or via the Gems/Materials tab. Once you know what you have, your next decision will be whether to combine lower-level gems or go with what you have. Remember, the higher the level, the higher the stats provided when you use the gem!
If you would like to combine your lower-level gems then you can access that feature via the Combine tab within the Forge. Once you have your gems pulled up, you have the ability to either combine all gems or you can scroll down to find the individual gems that are ready to combine. I never suggest using the combine all function as you lose the ability to control your gem count. What do I mean by this? As you know, the number of gems you can use is dictated by the gear in which the gems are being placed. Ideally, for any gem-set that you are using you want to be sure that you have seven full sets of gems to fill your gear. While this is only important for Gem Sets that provide a set bonus, it is a good rule of thumb to follow for any gems. However, you are free to use different levels of gems within your gear and can and should do whatever provides the stats that you are looking for!
Once you have your Gems at the highest level you can combine to, or have them as high as you want to go, your next step will be to insert them into your gear. There are multiple ways to gain access to your gear in order to add gems – under the Inventory tab in the Forge or through the Hero Profile page are two ways that come to mind. For me, I have found that it is easier to access my Heroes from the Hero Profile page and I then make any changes to my gear by selecting the gear from my presets as this allows me to access multiple gear sets at once. When I am gemming my gear, I will select a piece of the gear that I am changing, hit the “Embed” button on that screen, and then hit the Gem Presets button on the following screen. Once I have accessed my Gem Presets, I am free to play around with my Gem combinations until I am satisfied with the stats that I have added to my Hero and can then activate that Preset, rather than adding individual gems, to my gear.
The “Oldie but Goodie” Gems
Some gems retain their applicability to the game due to their unique qualities while other gems remain relevant because there simply is no gem that provides the same stat. These are the gems that I am going to talk about first and they cover everything from Monster stats, to Economy stats, to March stats.
First, let’s talk about what I call the specialty gems. The first specialty gem depicted below is called the Prophecy Gem.
This gem can be placed in your fourth (special) gem slot and allows you to use two of the same gems in one piece of gear, basically doubling the stats available from the gems. For me, I use the Prophecy Gem in the fourth gem slot of my Economy gear to increase the benefit provided in using that gear. By way of example, my Grand Marshal gear, which is what I presently use for training, has two Training Gems and the Prophecy Gem so that I can reduce my training time by 70%.
The next special gem that is still relevant is the Hades Gem, shown below.
The Hades Gem is used by people who want to hide the gear they are using on their Heroes. When one of these gems is active, the Hero Profile will look as though your gear slots are empty:
Pretty nifty, right? Unfortunately, probably not. Leads are extremely leery of hitting players when it appears as though they have no gear on their Hero. At this point, it just screams trap. Rather than using the Hades Gem to hide your gear, you would probably be better served to craft a lower level of the newer gear instead.
The next old gem that bears mention is used for attacking monsters. The Monster Gem, seen below, was only available for a limited period and I was only able to obtain a small number of these gems but they were worth it in my opinion.
Unfortunately, as this gem has to be used in the fourth gem slot, you cannot use the Prophecy Gem to double the Hero Monster March Speed Bonus (15%) or the Hero Critical Hit (1.8%) but there is another gem that you can add to your Monster gear to add a little extra oomph. The Monster Attack Gem, shown below, increases your Hero Attack Bonus by 25% when activated in your Monster Gear.
As I touched on previously, there are certain gems that can be used in conjunction with the Prophecy Gem to bolster the economy stats available in other gems. There are presently three Economy gear sets (four if you count the Powerforged Gear Set) that can be used for basic account functions like building, research, or training and there are gems that can be used with those gear sets. The first gem that you can use to save in costs is the training gem:
This gem increases your training speed by 5% per gem. If you double the gem up for each piece of gear in your Grand Marshal or Powerforged gear, you will realize a total training speed increase of 70% (in MZ math……LOL).
There is also a gem that increases your construction build by 10% per gem:
This gem can be doubled up in your Glorious Architect gear to provide you a 140% construction speed increase when leveling up your buildings.
The final economy gem that is still relevant at this time is the Research Gem, shown here:
When you use two of these gems in the gem slots for the Magister Research Set you will see a 70% reduction in your research time.
The final older gems that can still play an effective role in your account are gems related to your march speed. Here, savvy leads have crafted a set of gear that they use when launching an attack, be it solo or rally, that sends a much faster march than what is provided by the current best attack gear. Embedded in the gem slots for that march gear are the following three gems:
Superior March Gem – provides three 35% March speeds: March Speed, Attack March Speed, and March Return Speed Bonus.
Falling Star Gem – provides an 11% War March Speed.
March Gem – provides an 11% March Speed.
All of the gems in this section were released earlier in the game but clearly provide an advantage to players who have them available. If you have them, you should take advantage of them as they can save you time and effort as you work on your account.
The Fun Gems – Attack, Defense, and Wonder Play
Now it’s time for the fun gems. Each of the gem sets listed in this part provides a significant advantage when attacking or defending in different scenarios. Let’s take a look at what I consider the absolute best defense gems at this time. This would be the Abyss Gem Set. The Abyss gem set is comprised of the following 4 gems:
When you have this gem set active in your gear, you will see the following stat increase for each piece of gear containing the full set shown in green in the picture below.
Because of the individual gem stats and, more importantly, the set bonus linked to Wonder stats, I also believe that the Spiral Abyss Gem Set is the strongest gem set to use when fighting for Wonders. Essentially you get a two-for-one special with the Spiral Abyss set!
Now, for all you rally leads out there. Sure, we sometimes have a love/hate relationship but I still think about your accounts with love when you are hating me! LOL Seriously, though, you guys have probably one of the strongest gem sets in the game right now! That gem-set, of course, is the Battlemark Rally Assault Gem Set – January 2021. The Battlemark gem-set consists of the following four gems:
With all four of these gems placed in your attack gear you attain the following gem set bonus for your Rally Attack Bonus:
Holy. Crap. When you place 7 sets of these gems in a full set of Legendary attack gear your Rally Attack Bonus will go up to 420,000%! That will definitely leave a mark on most strongholds!
My Final Thoughts
Remember, a guide is just a guide. You should play around with your gems to see what works best for your account. For me, I think that the Spiral Abyss is the best defensive set to use. Other people may look at the Battlemark Rally set and point out that it has great Type stats and believe that using it is a better call. If I run a single troop type account, and want to maximize my Type stats, it may make more sense to use either the Unbreakable, Atrocity, or Maximus Gem Set depending on my focus. Obviously, there will be a trade-off between the Type stats available in those gem sets versus the Empire Defender stats that are gained from the Abyss Gem Set. Figure out what works best for your build and run with it! Sometimes you have to burn to learn!
