Halloween may be over but you can still engage the little witch inside you to craft ghoulish potions in the Alchemy Lab! In this guide, we will cover everything there is to know about the Alchemy Lab and give you critical insight into crafting effective potions to strengthen your account.
The “only because my editor made me do it” Disclaimer: The stats and potion selections presented in this article are current as of the date of publication. As anyone who plays Dragon Dimension knows, MZ is always releasing new components to the game and sometimes even changes stat functionality without notice. With every release that occurs, the information contained in this article will become staler (unless updated, of course!). Use this information at your own risk!
Alchemy Lab Basics
As of this writing, the Alchemy Lab is one of three special buildings that have a maximum level of 10. Once you have obtained an unlock for the foundation you can then use upgrade badges and improvement upgrade badges to raise the building to its maximum level. Shown below are all of the items you need to take your Alchemy Lab to Level 10.
If you are curious as to how many Alchemy tomes you need to elevate your Alchemy Lab, and the benefits of doing so, Cinder covered this in a past article that you can read here.
The first point that I would like to make about the Alchemy Lab is that its only function is the crafting of potions that provide limited stat upgrades. This building, like many other buildings in our stronghold, does not provide attack or defense stats of any kind. Instead, it is purely utilitarian. The biggest benefits of maxing the Alchemy Lab include increasing the duration of your potions and increasing the number of ingredients that you can add to your potions.
Another point that I would make regarding crafting potions is that, unlike crafting gear, the research that you have completed has no effect on the overall strength of your potion, the cost to craft, or any other factor related to the potion. Unfortunately, you get what you get once you have crafted your potion just as every other player in the game!
Where do you obtain vials and potion ingredients for your potions? At present, the only way to obtain these critical items is via packs. What we have seen historically is that MZ releases special vials and ingredients that correspond to events or themes running through the game. In October, MZ released Super Vials and limited edition ingredients that, when combined, provided significant Wonder and Type debuffs. If your style of play required debuffs, Wonder and Fortress players for instance, then these potions were a great release for you. Traps, on the other hand, were probably not as excited by the October 2021 potion release as they would have been for higher type stats or Empire Defender stats. At times you will find Potion-specific packs that contain older vials and ingredients that you can buy to increase your inventory. What we have observed, however, is that the stats available in older vials and ingredients may not be worth the expense of purchasing the pack. Exercise due diligence before purchasing a Potion pack to ensure that it actually contains items that you will use!
The biggest problem that you will encounter in purchasing vials and ingredients is that what you obtain is based on pure blind luck. For example, the October 2021 Vial and Ingredient selections showed the following percentage chances for obtaining certain vials and ingredients:
As you can see, you are not guaranteed to receive any particular vial or ingredient. Instead, for vials, you have a 4.881% chance of receiving certain Pick Your Own Vials for either Type Defense Debuff, Type Health Debuff, or Type Attack Debuff. If you are in the market for a Super Vial, your chances drop even further, 0.5632% for a Type Debuff Vial or 0.1877% for a Wonder vial! With my luck, I would receive Wonder vials and would never have an opportunity to use them!
Potions are a great way for trap and defensive players to increase their stats without showing that increase to their attacker. In other words, potions are another hidden stat that strengthens your account without giving away how strong you are!
Now that we have the basics out of the way let’s take a closer look at using the Alchemy Lab to craft potions.
Depending on the level of your Alchemy Lab you can add between 1 and 6 ingredients to a vial to create a consumable potion that will last between 1 and 23 hours. Internally, the Alchemy Lab is structured in a way that is very much so user friendly. Here is what you see when you enter the Alchemy Lab:
As you can see, you have four essential options to choose from: (1) Use Potion; (2) Craft Potions; (3) Inventory; and (4) Vials/Ingredients. Much of this is self-explanatory. The Use Potion button is a quick way to access your Inventory, which is where you can choose between potions that you have already crafted. The Vials/Ingredients tab takes you to a display that provides you separate lists of all Vials and Ingredients that you have at your disposal for crafting Potions and is great for reviewing all of the options you have available.
One thing that I would like to point out is that you should never assume that the potion or ingredient tabs within the Vials/Ingredients view is showing you every ingredient or vial that you have at your disposal. When you click on the crossed swords, for example, it will not necessarily show you all attack vials. Similarly, when you click on the shield tab, it does not always show you every defense vial. Be sure that you click through all options when deciding which vial or ingredient to use. It is rarely a good idea to rely on the categorization provided by MZ when it comes to vials or ingredients.
When it comes to potions, the fun stuff happens when you select the Craft Potions option. Doing so brings up a screen that looks similar to your Vials/Ingredients layout with one critical difference – the bubbling green cauldron on which your potions are crafted! There are no real limitations on what ingredients you can combine to craft a potion. The only real limitation would be that you cannot use two of the same ingredient in a single potion. Beyond that, you can combine any ingredient into any vial and you will create a potion. Whether the potion is effective or not would be a different issue!
One question that I regularly receive when it comes to crafting potions is what ingredients to use. Quite frankly, the world is your oyster when it comes to crafting potions. The trick is to make sure that the ingredients that you are using match the stats boosted by the Vial you have selected. By way of example, if the Vial you have chosen only boosts Empire Defender Attack, such as we saw with certain of the July 2021 vials, then you would not want to include ingredients that boost Empire Defender Defense or Empire Defender Health. While you can certainly use non-Empire Defender Attack ingredients, and the additional stats available from the ingredients will apply, the non-Empire Defender Attack stats will not likely be significant enough to justify using the ingredients. Instead, you will want to use as many Empire Defender Attack ingredients as you have at your disposal when crafting the potion for maximum effectiveness.
Another question that I am asked with some regularity is whether there is a way to consistently ensure that I am obtaining higher stats when I craft potions. Honestly, there really is no way to ensure that max stats are achieved when crafting potions. You can craft two of the same potions, using the same vials and ingredients in the exact same order, and you are likely to have a high and low outcome. What has worked for me, anecdotally, is that I use my highest-rated ingredients first. For example, if I have a Vial that boosts Empire Defender Attack, Empire Defender Defense, and Empire Defender Health then I begin with Empire Defender Attack and use my highest matching ingredient in the first ingredient slot. The second ingredient slot will be filled with the ingredient that contains my next-highest Empire Defender Attack stat. I will then turn to the ingredients containing Empire Defender Defense stats and do the same for the next two slots. Finally, I follow the same pattern for the Empire Defender Health stats. This process has always worked for me but probably does not matter in the long run. As I have said before when you craft potions you get what you get!
The real secret to the strength of potions lies in the Vial that you use to hold your ingredients. By far, the Vial itself will provide the highest boost. Your ingredient selections will advance the boost further but most of the stats you gain come from the vessel used. This being so, an evaluation of potions is really an evaluation of the vials you have available in your inventory. Let’s take a look at the vials and ingredients that you could use to craft various potions for your account.
Generally speaking, attack vials are going to be limited to either Empire Assault, Type, Troop, or Debuff stats at present. My vial inventory contains vials that can increase Empire Assault Attack, Health, and Defense by 720% all the way up to approximately 35,000%. Since I rarely attack other players, my inventory of attack vials is slim. Players like WinterPark, TamirTT, SavageBeast, or CHOSEN are likely to have much more robust attack inventories than I do. The key to choosing the right vial here would be to cater to what you are doing. If you are rallying strongholds, you should focus on Empire Assault stats in your potion. If you are rallying fortresses, you may want to go for Debuff potions. Mix and match to the extent that you have the ingredients to do so as you may come up with a combination no one has thought of and rule the battlefield!
You guys know me. I am all about that trap life and defense potions are where it’s at on my account! By way of example, I am saving this one for a special occasion:
I do not presently need to use this potion but that 277,000% Empire Defender Attack, 312,000% Empire Defender Defense, and 158,000% Empire Defender Health could come in handy if I take a break and do not continue advancing my research for a little bit!
Defense potions should be all about the Empire Defender stats. That being said, there have been some interesting combination vials released. For example, I have a vial that boosts Empire Defense Attack by 8,000% and also provides an Enemy Troop Attack Debuff of 6,000%. This would be a good vial to use if my troop count is low and I do not have time to quickly train between rallies as it would boost my attack while reducing the attack of the lead hitting me!
Generally speaking, the Wonder vials are harder to obtain than any other vials in the game. As you saw from the earlier screenshot, you have a much better chance of obtaining non-Wonder vials than you do Wonder-specific vials. I have never understood this disparity but, fortunately, this has never been an issue on my account! If you are a Wonder fighter, the October 2021 vials and ingredients contained great Wonder attack, defense, and health debuffs, AND another vial that contained Siege attack, defense, and health debuffs. Similarly, earlier releases included other vials that significantly increased Wonder attack, defense, and health stats. The vials and ingredients that you need to strengthen your account are there. The sad news is that you will have to spend significantly more to obtain them!
Unfortunately, MZ has not released any true specialized potions that would apply directly to anything beyond the three configurations discussed above.
My Final Thoughts on Potions
Potions are another tool to ADD stats to your account. Your focus should always be on building a strong base by completing the research relevant to your style of play FIRST. For many players, myself included, “popping” a potion only occurs if I need an extra boost against an attacker that I know is probably too strong for my current stats. I rarely begin an event with any of the potions that I have in my inventory active. The reason for this is that I am careful with consumable items that can only be replenished by spending. This is the right approach for me but you should play the game the way that works for you!
