      Beginner Defense Strategies

They say Defense is your best offense, but they also say offense is your best defense.. so which is it?! I don’t know, but I’ll teach how to defend yourself in Game of War.

Editors Note: This post was originally published in December 2014 and has been completely revamped and updated for accuracy and comprehensiveness.

My inspiration for this post was that we (UKc) were the ruling Alliance in k80 with one pretty strong Alliance (UVG) opposing us. We had 2 massive spenders and they had 4, but 1 of ours has the most Power and T4s in the Kingdom. Because they have 4 big spenders, those spenders can easily take out a lot of our mid size players, therefore 98% percent of our Alliance has to take major precautions to keep from being slaughtered.

Making habits out of these tips is essential. Pro athletes are good because they can make amazing plays out of habit. Be a pro gamer 😉 Too many times to admit, I have neglected one or more of these tips and have severely regretted it. Severely. Abiding by these rules also helps extremely reduce your stress when playing the game.

      Turtle Tactic Defense

The term “turtle tactics” or “TT” refers to extreme Defense measures to take when you anticipate being attacked by a large Alliance that will wipe out everything you have. TT will protect your Hero, all your Troops, and most of your Resources.

game of war defense turtle tactics
How you should play Game of War when big players are bullying you.

These are tactics I have learned while being in the #2 most powerful Alliance in my Kingdom and constantly being bullied by the much more powerful #1 Alliance. The number one thing I try to focus on is not losing my Hero. When your Hero has been taken you no longer receive Hero Experience from anything. Hero Experience is essential to increasing your Hero Level, which in turn gives you more Skill Points and thus strength.

Do these things whenever you are going to be away from your device for an extended period of time so you don’t have to worry about having your hero taken.

      1. Put your Hero on an 8hr rally, 3-4hours away from your castle. When your Hero is in a rally he cannot be captured. This gives you 8hrs of safety plus the travel to and from the castle you are rallying too. Pro Tip: You only need 1 troop with your hero for a rally, but all the troops you put in a rally cannot be hurt and cannot protect your Stonghold.
      2. Make sure your Hospitals can hold the rest of the troops that cannot fit into your rally. You can check Hospital space by tapping on your Hospital and looking at the bar that says 0/#####. If you want to be a super big player you can build more Troops Hospitals, or have no Hospitals at all, but you would want around 10 million T4 for that. Lower tier troops can be used if you want to be a trap.
      3. Upgrade your Storehouse to the Level of your Stronghold so that you can protect the maximum amount of res possible. If you are producing Resources at a high rate, attempt to offload them to your bank as often as possible when you are above Storehouse Level. The more time you keep your Resources above the protected amount of your Storehouse the more risk you have of losing them in an Attack.
      4. Do not Farm on tiles. Especially with your Hero. If you are desperate for Resources and absolutely need to farm, only do so with T1 Troops.

      Spenders Section

If you are a big spender you can buy 8hr, 1day, or 3day shields to protect your castle from the enemy. Shields are very good for heavy Building, Researching, and Training periods.

Update: As the game has developed it’s become essential for a serious Alliance to have a bank and for each member have a Resource specialty. Gathering just doesn’t cut it, and is too risky.

      [the_ad id=”18771″]

      7 Things To Remember

      1. Do Not Farm With Your Hero and Only Farm with T1

Leave your Hero and excess troops in a protective 8 hour Rally, while you send out another March to Farm. It’s very easy for a powerful enemy to Attack you on a tile with all their Troops vs. only a few of yours and take your hero. “Ghost rallying” protects your hero from being taken if they enemy decides to attack your castle. Even if the enemy destroys all your traps, they cannot take your hero if it is in a ghost rally.

Also, only ever farm with T1 because they are far cheaper and faster to retrain than any other tier.

      2. Do Not Leave Your Troops Farming Unattendedgame of war defense occupy enemy

If you cannot be on, do not Farm! This is the easiest way in the entire game to lose all your troops. It’s happened countless times to people in my Alliance. It is also the easiest way in my opinion to lose your heart for the game. Losing all your troops can be very depressing.

      3. Scout Before Attacking

When attacking, scout first to make sure you are sending the appropriate troops. The most obvious reason to make sure the enemy is not stronger than you. If they have a similar Troop count but way more power, then they have far more research and you should stay away. Look for enemies will similar Troop count and Research, or for an enemy with a lot of troops that are weak to the Troops you have. For example, Ranged beats Infantry.

      4. Use Troop Strengths To You Advantage

Each troop type has strengths and weaknesses, make sure you are using them to your advantage. Battling against the Troops that are weak to yours will get you an extraordinary kill death ratio. School Bus, the player with the highest kills in GOW, says he uses Ranged 90% of the time because most people train Infantry.

      5. Keep Your Resource Below Storehouse Limit

When attacking, Resources should not be above your Storehouse limit! Someone can port in and attack you while you’re attacking. Good players use this tactic often, especially when they are fighting spenders. Spenders have unlimited ATPs and will use them often to attack you. Frequently our mid range players will jump to our rival enemy hive, after a few attacks, an enemy spender ports in and attacks them while their Troops are Marching. This usually wipes out all of my their traps and takes their Resources if they haven’t offloaded them to another member.

      6. Spec Your Hero For War / Defense

Don’t forget to have your hero spec’d for war. Stack as much Defense as you can if you are trying to save Troops. During Kill Events this is most important. Some spenders will attack any time anywhere, but others will wait for Kill Events. If you are shielded for multiple days, or have your troops rallied, then you can stay spec’d for production.

      7. Have A Peace Shield As Backupgame of war defense peach shield

Have a peace shield and a random port as a part of your “survival kit” at all times. Save your loyalty specifically for these items. You should always have 1 of each on hand. The shield is to shield in the case of an attack… and the random port is to keep the enemy from bookmarking your location and coming back to you later.

What other tactics do you use for defense? Leave them in the comments below!

      Enjoy!

Full Prospectors gear set with Prospectors gems (star shaped gems), the level of the gems provide shields for tiles depending on whichever level of the gems are embedded. If you have level 6 gems in each piece of gear, it won’t matter what level of tile you gather from … every march will be protected by a shield, except certain tiles like gold, mystic monster, and gift tiles.

Check you special inventory for equipment bags. Also, sometime back they offered an inventory upgrade item that greatly improved your inventory space. It was given in a DBC pack I believe.

More troops friend. Its still best gear. I can burn that set up at 5 Billion troops, but its fairly close. Three kunai has worked well against rally leaders as well. But doubt you get much action with that many troops. If you want remain your current power size you need to bolster defense through use of cores. If you don’t want to increase troops increase research.

Yes this post has to do with defense in the sense of not getting hit which is applicable to millions of players who play this game. This is not a post about combat defense, which is very different like you have mentioned.

        hi,
i am just new to this game, read a lot my few quires are.
        1) during a attack, beside reso, can our crafting material, and equipment can be lost ?
        2) is it wise to open all chest and keep item staked for later crafting, or we shall open chest only when we are ready to craft.
        3) oflate i am receiving a lot of ally gift, 70-80 per day, how we get these gifts ( my troops are on a lvl 3 treasure map, digging, hope this is not the reason)

          1) No

          2) Open all since it’s gonna take a while unless you have VIP 12. You won’t lose it when you get attacked since you’re worried about that

          3) You get gifts from your alliance members buying packs and killing monsters. Treasure map and digging has nothing to do with alliance gifts

          1) Yes, sometimes you can lose a material or 2 but nothing that has been crafted.

          2) Open all.

          3) Ditto James.

            1. You never lose materials. Trust me we have all tried attacking farms to get the l6 item. The materials you get in battle are from Athena not from the player

Regards farming, I have a small T2 meat shield. Only my T2 get sent out farming. Given im a billion power player, losing 375k T2 is no big loss. Especially with recent training capacity boosts making them easier to replace. I dont constantly watch over them as this wouldnt be practical on a lvl6 tile in the forest. Id be sat watching for hours.

Consideration should be given to march tree vs set bonus tree. Many traps do the march tree in order to get to presets. Traps dont march so large parts of this tree are useless. Presets are also in the set bonus tree. If wearing a full set gear, then it may be wiser to unlock presets in set bonus tree and also benefit from set bonuses.

I agree on farming, I farm offline all day everyday and maybe 1 in 6 tiles will get hit, but even if they take out a full march of t2s,,,, it’s just t2s and that’s still 5 marches that came home so to be getting the materials and rss or gold outweighs the loss of a few troops.

This may not be as feasible for someone who is smaller and can’t train a ton of troops in a batch. For smaller players, if your alliance is in the hotspot, don’t try to drain a tile, just take what you can afford to lose in troops and youll be fine. Also I’d farm only lvl 6 or at the smallest lvl 5 tiles 1) they way faster 2) level 6 tiles almost always drop at least lvl 5 materials those of you who need glass for chalices or other materials need to be farming those level six tiles like crazy. 3) you don’t need to drain the whole tile to get good materials.

lastly I noticed you didn’t mention rss shields — anyone with over 250k troops who doesn’t want to shield could put their excess troops on a lvl 1 monster tile, put a rss shield and they will be safe for hours, lvl 1 shields take 100000 centuries to drain. I’d be careful the first time and check the time it takes to drain just to be sure how long it takes.

If your shielded, or have beds for your troops put them on a lvl 5 or 6 monster tile and get the great materials — particularly now that MZ is releasing combat sets from monster gear farming those tiles will be more important

        Hey man,

You have really great guides & tips, even interesting sources which is why everyone comes here. One thing ive found little to 0 information on is the whole “rally swallowing” thing- i have a 700M acct and im working to rally swallowing (researching the defense branch that just came out & stuff) any chance ypu have any tips on converting to turtling (how many hospitals CAN one have for example, and maybe a brief tip on the defense research? Is it more effective to super train or super heal? Stuff like that are the things that keep me & my alliance up at night.

Would be great to hear back from you regardless though-

        Your Personal South African fan,

        BaironDH

          Byron,

I was looking through old unapproved comments and meant to answer this for you. Have you figured it out by now. Super sorry about the extremely late reply, I try to only reply when I have an answer for someone ready.

Hi Chad. I’m in a relatively small alliance in 414.
I would like to know (1) what an ideal trapper city setup would be. I’ve been told 5 barracks, 1 villa and rest hospitals.
And (2) what should your hero skill tree look like and (2) the best items to embed.

In addition to the 8-hour protective rally, you can protect troops by sending them as reinforcements to a shielded ally (such as a communal bank) and you can join someone else’s 8-hour rally. The last suggestion can be difficult because you cannot recall your troops once they join that other person’s rally. Also, if they cancel their rally early, your troops will be sent home automatically and be exposed.

Ya King I shy away from commenting on troop strength ratios between tiers because there are just so many factors involved, I prefer to just tell people to pick unfair fights they know they can win 😉

Haha isn’t that the best feeling when you see them port and leave just in time. Ya definitely it’s the mental aspect that gets the spenders, not the money. Don’t get a false sense of security on farming though, the bigs in my kingdom time their attacks to land one second after I land on tiles. I haven’t farmed in 3 months because of our banking system. It’s great.

Farming should really be looked at from 2 aspects though. 1) RSS and 2)materials. while good alliances have a hyper rss system in place this does not help with gathering of materials needed for equipment builds.

Yes, although even gathering for materials can sometimes be certain death. Depends on the kingdom.

Aww! That is so awesome! The way to break someone’s shield Lol Great to know, thank you. I always make sure my troops reach their tile so I can see if there is someone waiting for me there, like if someone ported in to do a tile attack on me. Aw man, so many times especially recently someone significantly bigger than me has ported in RIGHT next to the rss tile I was on but thank god I was staring at it the entire time. Lol I’m sure that pisses them off to waste a port. It probably doesn’t with all these deep pocket players. It wishful thinking to think it pisses them off, makes me feel like a got something over them. Lol

What is the kill ratio between the different level of troops considering all variable influences are equal, e.g research, hero level, gear, etc? Or more simply put, how many T1 infantry to kill a T2 and T3 infantry troop and how many t2 to kill a t3? How does health factor in the troop kill?

I have yet to hear that answer, ill ask around again. But the problem with that question is that “all variable influences” will never be equal. Or at least the odds are .00001% because a person training t1s would never have the same amount of research and hero level as a person training t2s and so on. I think the more important thing you should be thinking about is how unfair you can make a fight in your favor. For example, I try to tile hit as much as possible during kill events so I can maximize the ratio “my troops:their troops” and avoid their castle traps and hospitals. If I am hitting someone at their castle I almost always hit people with no traps, or I rally with 2-3 teammates to our troop loss is very minimal.
Sorry I can’t directly answer your question right now.

Hi, I have been reading and looking at notes, it seams that the retio t1 to t2 and so is 1:4, only is same type that is!
If you talk about infantry t1 vs. cavalry t2 you should have a draw or victory for the t1!
This works for all levels, the problem is that bigger guys also have better research, the real ratio would be more than 1:10
